Environmental Metrics

The new homes sector has come together to create a straightforward framework to report key environmental metrics consistently.

The Future Homes Hub has been working with a set of leading developers, financial institutions, and other key stakeholders to define a common language to describe sustainability performance. Our core metrics are designed from the ground up with the sector to be accessible as possible while remaining meaningful.

ROADMAP GOAL

Consistent and robust environmental performance measurement across homebuilders and the sector

Purpose

  1. To define a common language for sustainability performance across the new homes sector, according to clear, standardised and unambiguous methodologies
  2. To enable consistent and comparable sustainability reporting, supporting homebuilders to align with future regulatory, stakeholder and investment reporting expectations
  3. To guide the sector to instil good data culture and increase its familiarity with reporting environmental performance metrics across the spectrum of developers

See the launch brochure for a summary table of use cases, outlining the value of metrics to different stakeholder groups

Context

While leading homebuilders are advancing rapidly in their efforts to report environmental performance, other organisations who lack the resource and skillset are often left behind. At the same time, there is a wide range of often overlapping reporting frameworks, providing a confusing landscape for those homebuilders who are interested in beginning their reporting journey.

External stakeholders, standard setters and investors are increasingly requiring an understanding of homebuilder sustainability performance to make evidenced judgements. The New Homes Environmental Metrics condenses the key environmental sustainability topics necessary to support these decisions, while making the process of reporting as straightforward and accessible as possible.

We are working with key sustainability benchmarks and frameworks including NextGeneration and B4NZ to align metrics where relevant, reducing duplication and developer effort. This work will continue as we finalise the full set of environmental metrics

Environmental metrics for the sector were originally proposed in the Future Homes Delivery Plan, with subsequent commitments made in Future Homes, One Plan and One Plan: scaling up delivery.

Reporting toolkit

The metrics toolkit comprises two documents: a technical manual providing methodologies and instructions, and a spreadsheet-based reporting tool to allow metric reporting to the Hub.

Next steps

This is just the beginning. We are launching the core metrics now to allow homebuilders to familiarise themselves and put in place the processes needed to report against them. We strongly encourage any homebuilders interested in reporting to consider joining our pilot programme. This will help refine the methodologies to make reporting as efficient as possible.

Our working group is currently developing methodologies for the extended metrics, enabling reporting across the full range of environmental topics. These will initially be aimed at larger homebuilders, and we will launch the complete set of metrics in 2026.

Looking forward, the metrics are designed to evolve—with industry feedback, digital tools, and streamlined approaches to data assurance and benchmarking on the roadmap. We will continue to support the sector to improve the quality and ease of reporting and to instil good data culture.
