The Hub is working with homebuilders, manufacturers, government bodies and other experts to prepare for mainstream measurement and reduction of embodied and whole life carbon (WLC). One of the key outcomes identified in the 2023-2025 Implementation plan for the homebuilding industry is to develop a simplified measurement approach and tool for new homes; and any supporting datasets that will be required. The tool will help homebuilders to assess their carbon impact in a quick and consistent way, reducing the barrier to WLC assessment, particularly for those who may be just starting their WLC journey.
Through a series of four workshops, the Hub has consulted with a wide range of stakeholders, primarily Future Homes Hub members, to agree the scope and priorities for the tool and method. The aim of the workshops was to draw out the existing knowledge, establish the ‘must-haves’, ‘nice-to-haves’ and ‘must-avoids’, as well as understand the current barriers to undertaking whole life carbon calculations. The resultant brief will inform the development of the simple tool. It has been tested with SME homebuilders, medium and large homebuilders and manufacturers / supply chain partners as part of this process.
During the second half of 2023, a number of working groups will identify supporting data sets and agree the modelling assumptions and conventions for new homes that will be required.
Until the end of July, the Hub is inviting expressions of interest from tool providers, consultants, and other organisations with the capability to develop the front end of the tool.
